Here in Uganda, dusk comes so quickly. One minute the rays are beaming through the windows, the curtains, our hearts. The next moment, all of a sudden it’s hard to see. Time to scramble, close the screens, the blinds. Flip switches. Figure out when the dark settled in.
The sun and moon go from day to dusk quickly, without regard for us. The same can go for our hearts. Our children’s hearts.
Our new little one can be playing with his siblings, loving, jumping, running. Then something in his little heart stirs. Clicks. Trembles with a memory, or a fear. And it’s dusk. Time to scramble. Or fight. Or cry.
This isn’t solely linked to our adoptive heart. All of our sons, our daughters, go through dusk. When dusk settles on their heart and for all the good you’ve loved them through, the bad, this moment of hard, seems like it will never leave.
I’m sure some of my fellow moms, my fellow sisters, my fellow humans can relate. Something triggers and your heart goes to it’s own personal dusk. Darkness. To Darken.
There are as many triggers as there are people.
But you know what? The dusk will end. Self-induced or not.
Because HE is greater than the dusk.
My favorite thing to do when I feel my own personal dusk coming on is to copy God’s word into my journal. Sometimes it’s too hard to pray my own words. Sometimes I just don’t know what to say. But God’s words. They never fail. This is my prayer for my children as well, to know where to turn when they do feel dusky.
Do you struggle with triggers? Things that set off an emotional reaction in your heart and mind that you know isn’t truth, but you just need to read the truth? Me too. Here are some of my favorite verses regarding God’s light overcoming darkness! I pray they bless you as they have me.
If I say, “Surely the darkness shall cover me, and the light about me be night,”
even the darkness is not dark to you; the night is bright as the day, for darkness is as light with you.
Light dawns in the darkness for the upright: he is gracious, merciful, and righteous.
for at one time you weredarkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light
He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.
1 Peter 2:9
But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.
