In case I haven’t mentioned it before, or if you are new to this space, our family homeschools! We are now in our fourth year doing so, and even though some days I still feel like a complete newbie, other days I have found that I can offer advice as to curriculums we have used, schedules we have tried, and the heart of the matter: God using us moms in ministering to our children through our home AND our school.
When we started my oldest’s (who is now in third grade) first grade year, we purchased Grapevine Studies for our bible curriculum. We had used something different during kindergarten, and though it was colorful, it was extremely time consuming for my little one who wasn’t reading on her own yet. I didn’t notice much memory of what we had worked on either, so I was looking for something new to try in 1st grade.
My friend Valerie told me about Grapevine, I think she heard about it on Confessions of a Homeschooler years ago. We decided on the Old Testament Catechism for our first year. I think they have updated the content a little over the past 3 years, but the ease of use and benefits of this program haven’t changed! I purchased what I needed and it was emailed to me for download right away. You can print as you go, or print it in bulk.
We love the vision of this family owned business:
That first year, I printed two books and had them bound at our local Office Max, one for Cara and one for Micah. Micah was too young to really ‘do’ the curriculum, but I knew he’d want to do anything Cara would. We easily did 1-2 lessons a day that year. My kids really learned the sequence of the bible and had a great time drawing the stick figures. I had to sometimes write the longer portions of the answers for them, but they REALLY enjoyed the pictures and drawing and can still talk about the things we’ve learned.
Fast forward a few years, we follow them on Facebook and they regularly give away free elessons, or intros to lessons. Over the years we’ve done The Gospel lesson, The Resurrection and our most recent lesson: Ruth.
The great thing is, this company is always changing and making things better for their customers. They now have traceable lessons for ages 3-5 years, as well as lessons for other age groups. They have many multi-level books, which is great for our family! We need some traceables, some beginners, some level 1, and now Cara is into level 2!
