For me (Eric), one of the most powerful ways I here the Holy Spirit speak in my life is through music. Sometimes it’s just the progression in the music or the emotion conveyed through it that brings this sense of connection. Other times it’s the words that are so simple, yet so convicting. Then there are those songs that hit you square between the eyes and you know without a doubt that He is talking to you. With just a few words you are pulled into this intimate conversation with God.
I Surrender by Hillsong was God getting my attention. He’s ready to talk.
The song “I surrender” by Hillsong is so hauntingly powerful. It speaks to almost everything I want and desire in my relationship with The Creator of the universe, but who still knows each hair on my head (figuratively in my case). It speaks to the craving that we have for that deeper relationship with Him. The lyrics speak of being desperate for God. Having a hunger for the grace and mercy He so lovingly gives us; neither of which we deserve. I love the word picture in the bridge that says “Like a rushing wind, Jesus breathe within. Lord have your way, Lord have your way in me.” This is not just a prayer for the Lord to help out with one problem or issue, but a declaration for Jesus to breathe into us and have his way IN us. Not only that, it says like a rushing wind. Not a small gust, but like the wind that God sent that parted the Red Sea in Exodus 14:21.
As amazing as this is to think about, it all comes down to one word in the beginning of the song. “Here I am, down on my knees again, surrendering ALL.” I think this is one of the hardest things for us (myself included) as a people to do. A lot of us get really good at surrendering 80%, or maybe even 92%. But ALL? I think that most of us probably have something deep down that we really don’t want to give up. We feel like maybe we can handle it ourselves, or even worse, that our something is either too big or too small for God. This is a struggle that I can have of under-estimating God or over-estimating myself. So the question is, are we really willing to surrender ALL to the Lord so that He can have His way and do mighty things through us for His glory? I love this song because it so beautifully conveys the relationship I want with God but with one word challenges me to my core.
Love the Lord Your God, with ALL your heart, ALL your soul, and ALL your strength.
My prayer for all of us is that we can give our ALL to God, so that we can receive ALL He has to offer.
